Google has introduced a new heat resilience tool designed to help city planners and decision-makers mitigate the impacts of extreme heat, especially in vulnerable urban areas. Using satellite-based, high-resolution land surface temperature data combined with machine learning, the tool identifies heat absorption factors like buildings and tree cover. It also highlights areas of social vulnerability, such as low-income neighborhoods, which are most in need of relief. The tool enables users to simulate the effects of strategies like increasing tree cover or installing cool roofs, helping officials present actionable data to advocate for heat mitigation policies and apply for grants. Google's goal is for thousands of cities to eventually adopt the tool to implement effective solutions.
