The U.S. Department of Energy announced $2.2 billion in grants for eight power transmission projects across 18 states, aimed at expanding and upgrading the grid. The projects will add approximately 13 gigawatts of capacity—comparable to six and a half Hoover Dams. Funded under the 2021 infrastructure law, the grants will support 600 miles of new transmission lines and 400 miles of reconductoring to enhance existing lines. Key projects include a $600 million initiative in California and $389 million for offshore wind interconnections in New England. This marks the second round of funding from the $10.5 billion Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program, addressing the need for a more resilient grid amid increasing climate-related challenges.
