Steel, a vital material in modern infrastructure, is produced using highly polluting methods, contributing to significant carbon emissions and environmental harm. However, the United States is at the brink of a transformative shift towards "green steel," with emerging solutions focusing on hydrogen-based steelmaking. At the Society of Environmental Journalists conference, a panel discussed the challenges and opportunities of transitioning from coal-based steel mills to cleaner methods. This coincided with the Biden administration's commitment of up to $1 billion for hydrogen-based ironmaking facilities. The panel highlighted the potential of hydrogen-based steelmaking in reducing emissions and fostering sustainable industrial practices.
