Hanif grew up in Uganda, arriving in the UK as a refugee in the 1970s, and in 2022 has received the OBE for his services to architecture, engineering and education. He’s a co-founder and design director of the ‘interdisciplinary’ engineering practice AKT II, which today unites 300+ people through projects across 50+ countries; Hanif has driven the firm’s pioneering ‘design-led’ ethos. He’s also a professor-in-practice with the Harvard GSD, having previously taught with London’s Architectural Association as well as for other avant-garde design schools throughout Europe. And he routinely serves as an advisor for organisations ranging from the Mayor of London’s office, and the UK’s Design Council, to the global Aga Khan Development Network. Hanif’s further recognitions include the CTBUH 2022 ‘Fazlur R Khan’ Lifetime Achievement Medal, as well as the London Design Festival 2023 London Design Medal.
