Google has partnered with Kairos Power to potentially fuel its data centers with small modular reactors (SMRs), targeting 500 megawatts of 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. This pioneering agreement in the U.S. could accelerate SMR deployment and reduce costs through mass production. While Kairos plans its first reactor by 2027, many hurdles remain as this technology is still unproven on a commercial scale. The project aligns with broader U.S. government support for nuclear innovation to help decarbonize the grid.
