ICON Technologies Inc., the Austin-based pioneer in 3D-printed home construction, is laying off 114 employees, representing over 25% of its workforce, according to a WARN letter filed with the Texas Workforce Commission. The layoffs, effective March 8, 2025, are part of a company-wide effort to “re-align” its priorities and focus on growth opportunities, including the development of Phoenix, its advanced line of multi-story 3D printers.
Founded in 2017, ICON gained recognition in 2018 with the first permitted 3D-printed home in the U.S. Over the years, the company has raised over $450 million from prominent investors, achieving a valuation close to $2 billion by 2022. ICON has delivered more than two dozen 3D-printed homes, many for the homeless and those in poverty, and has partnered with developers like Lennar and nonprofits like Mobile Loaves & Fishes.
Moving forward, ICON aims to refine its operations, focusing on residential, hospitality, and social housing projects while advancing robotic construction technology. Despite the layoffs, ICON remains committed to its mission of revolutionizing homebuilding through sustainable 3D printing.
