New data reveals the organizations responsible for the largest share of global CO2 emissions from 2016 to 2022. Investor-owned companies like ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Chevron, and TotalEnergies, along with state-owned entities including Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Coal India, National Iranian Oil Co., and Rosneft, top the list. Saudi Aramco leads with a 4.8% share of global CO2 emissions. This concentration underscores the significant contribution of a small number of high emitters to global emissions, challenging efforts to mitigate climate change. Despite commitments like the Paris Agreement, many producers continue to expand production and emit more CO2, particularly state-owned companies, with Asia driving increased coal production and emissions. The findings highlight the need for urgent action to address emissions from fossil fuel and cement producers to align with climate goals.
