Equiem: USA Office Occupier Survey – What Do US Occupiers Want?

June 13 2019

Global property technology company, Equiem, has published the results of its most comprehensive Office Occupier Survey to date, gathering the views of over 1,500 office workers from across the USA, the UK and Ireland.

Hosted via the firm’s world leading tenant experience app, which is contracted or rolled-out across more than 8 million sq ft of prime commercial space in the USA, the results provide landlords and brokers with a unique insight into the changing expectations of America’s occupiers in 2019. Highlights include:

  • 83% of respondents say that their physical workplace is very or extremely important to their overall happiness and well-being in life
  • 95% of respondents say that enjoyment of their physical workplace is important to them when it comes to choosing a company to work for
  • 68%say enjoyment of their physical workplace is veryor extremelyimportant to them when it comes to choosing a company to work for
  • 94% of respondents believe that the average US office should place a greater emphasis on people’s enjoyment and comfort
  • 91%of respondents believe that the average US office should place a greater emphasis on providing better on-site amenities and community events
  • 96% of respondents say the average US office should place a greater emphasis on providing convenience to people working there eg. order lunch/coffee to desks; have dry cleaning picked up etc.
  • 67% of respondents say the opportunity to meet other people (not from their company) and create community in a workplace is important to them
  • 80% of respondents say the opportunity to pursue hobbies/activities at or near their workplace is important to them

Contracted or rolled out across 24 buildings in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, Austin and Houston, Equiem’s technology enables clients to make smarter, more effective asset management decisions by helping them analyse and better understand the needs of their occupiers. Alongside enabling regular surveys and polls, such as the Global Occupier Survey, the platform’s marketing-leading data analytics software provides owners with valuable, real-time data recording how occupiers are interacting with their workplace.

Commenting on the survey, Equiem’s CEO, Gabrielle McMillan, said:

“As America’s occupiers find themselves engaged in a fierce battle to attract and retain top talent, the workplace has become a vital tool in the recruitment process. The reality is that office owners who have understood how to create environments that satisfy the individual worker, will ultimately prove popular with occupiers themselves. A hugely important part of that process for landlords is establishing channels for feedback to better analyse and then meet the wants and needs of those within their buildings. Surveys like our Global Occupier Survey certainly provide a useful overview into general trends - for example the need for owners to provide better amenities, convenience and comfort - but every building is different and access to data analytics software like ours is now a necessity in today’s market.”
